Fake ass Jewish weddings and other stories

November 6, 2006

I love other cultures. I have quite a few Jewish friends and have attended so many of their weddings that I can spot a fake like a jeweler spots diamonique.

Tonight I went to the fakest Jewish wedding ever. First of all, there was a Christian priest who talked about God and Jesus the whole time. I’m all about interfaith ceremonies, but the only thing Jewish about that wedding was the breaking of the glass. It was hard not to snicker when the priest talked about the apostles for an hour and then mentioned something about people of the church and the House of Israel. Gag me.
When I was ready to get my Hava Nagila [sic: can't be bothered to Google proper spelling] on, these people did a totally half-assed version. They picked up the bride and groom one at a time instead of both together. And everyone crowded around them and stared instead of dancing around them in a circle, holding hands.

It was all I could do not to yell imposter and show those people how it was really done. Granted the bride was not Jewish and her family wasn’t familiar with the customs, but I was surprised the groom’s family didn’t get down and do it right.

It worried me. Being in an interracial rather than an interfaith marriage, I wonder if one of our customs will be lost when we have that day. Personally, I’m looking forward to jumping the broom.
The cool thing about weddings is you get to discuss what you liked and what was annoying on the ride home. Until you get stopped by a cop and your boyfriend, who’s driving, admits to having had a few, but “not as much as her.”
Wha?! The only thing I can say about that is, thank God for PBA cards.
